Question

A man is engaged for planting trees for 10 hours. He plants 10 trees in an hour. He takes rest for 30 minutes after every hour. How many trees does he plant in 10 hours?

This question was previously asked in
SSC CGL 2016 (Tier 1) Previous Year Question Paper (11-Sep-2016) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is

70

To determine how many trees the man plants in 10 hours, we need to account for the actual working time, excluding rest periods:

  • He plants 10 trees per hour.
  • After each hour of work, he rests for 30 minutes.

In 10 hours total, the man only works for 7 hours because:

  • Each working cycle (1 hour) takes 1.5 hours of real time: 1 hour of work + 0.5 hour of rest.
  • Number of complete cycles he can perform in 10 hours = \( \frac{10 \text{ hours}}{1.5 \text{ hours per cycle}} \approx 6.67 \). Since he cannot complete a cycle in less than complete hours, he completes 6 cycles.
  • 6 cycles = 6 hours of work + 3 hours of rest = 9 hours in total.
  • After 9 hours, he has 1 hour remaining. In this time, he can work for an additional hour without rest, completing 7 total hours of work.
Working HoursTrees Planted
77 x 10 = 70

Thus, he plants a total of 70 trees in 10 hours, making option 70 the correct answer.
