Question

If '+' means '−', '−' means '×', '×' means '÷' and '÷' means '+', then 12 × 4 ÷ 22 + 5 − 3 = ?

The correct answer is

10

This is a symbol-substitution question, so first swap every operator using the given rule before doing any arithmetic.

The rules are: '+' means '−', '−' means '×', '×' means '÷' and '÷' means '+'.

Rewriting \(12 \times 4 \div 22 + 5 - 3\) with these replacements gives \(12 \div 4 + 22 - 5 \times 3\).

Now apply BODMAS, handling division and multiplication before addition and subtraction.

Division first: \(12 \div 4 = 3\), and multiplication: \(5 \times 3 = 15\).

The expression reduces to \(3 + 22 - 15\).

Working left to right: \(3 + 22 = 25\), then \(25 - 15 = 10\).

Hence the value of the expression is 10.
