Both equality and liberty, while foundational democratic ideals, become inadequate and potentially destructive without the overarching framework of justice. Justice provides the moral compass that ensures these ideals are applied fairly and meaningfully, preventing them from leading to unintended negative consequences.

Liberty without justice can lead to a "tyranny of the strong." Unfettered freedom, in the absence of just rules, allows powerful individuals or groups to exploit the weak, monopolize resources, and suppress others' freedoms. For instance, absolute economic liberty without just regulations can create extreme wealth disparity, where some enjoy immense freedom at the cost of others' basic necessities and dignity. This isn't true liberty for all, but license for a few.

Equality without justice can be equally problematic. Formal equality (treating everyone the same) without considering existing systemic disadvantages can perpetuate injustice. For example, giving everyone "equal opportunity" to run a race, without accounting for some starting far behind due to historical oppression, is formally equal but deeply unjust. Such a system fails to address structural barriers. Conversely, striving for radical equality of outcome without justly considering merit, effort, or differing needs can also be seen as unjust, suppressing individual initiative.

Justice acts as the crucial mediating principle. It ensures that liberty doesn't devolve into license by defining legitimate boundaries and protecting the freedoms of all, especially the vulnerable. It ensures that equality aims not just for sameness, but for fairness, recognizing legitimate differences and striving to rectify historical wrongs, thus creating genuinely equitable opportunities. Justice provides the ethical criteria for distributing rights, responsibilities, opportunities, and burdens in a way that truly upholds human dignity and societal well-being. Without it, liberty becomes arbitrary, and equality becomes superficial.
