Question

Given below are two statements:
Statement I: RAM is internal memory and its access time is slower than that of Cache memory.
Statement II: ROM loses its data when the power is turned off.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

UGC NET 2023 Electronic Science Question Paper (13-Dec-2023) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

Statement I is true but Statement II is false.

Let us evaluate each statement separately.
Statement I: RAM (Random Access Memory) is indeed a type of internal memory of the computer. Cache memory sits between the CPU and RAM and is specifically designed to be much faster than RAM, so that the processor does not have to wait long for data. Since Cache is faster, RAM's access time is naturally slower than that of Cache memory - so this statement is correct.
Statement II: ROM stands for Read-Only Memory, and its defining characteristic is that it is non-volatile, meaning it retains its stored data even when the power supply is switched off (which is why it is used to permanently store firmware/BIOS instructions). It is actually RAM that is volatile and loses its data when power is turned off, not ROM. So the claim that ROM loses data when power is off is incorrect.
Since Statement I is correct and Statement II is incorrect, the right conclusion is Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
