Excess growth of aquatic plants in our water bodies is due to .............
Increase in Nitrate and phosphates
Excess growth of algae and aquatic plants in lakes and ponds is called eutrophication. It happens when water bodies receive too many plant nutrients.
The two key nutrients are nitrogen, mainly as nitrates, and phosphorus, mainly as phosphates. They enter water through fertiliser run-off from fields, sewage and detergents. Together they fuel algal blooms and weed growth, which later deplete dissolved oxygen as the plants decay.
Naming only nitrates or only phosphates gives half the cause, since both nutrients act together in eutrophication, and sodium is not a limiting nutrient for plant growth in water bodies.
Increase in Nitrate and phosphates option is correct.
