Question

“Dividend is not relevant in determining the value of the company”. Who among the following held this opinion ?

This question was previously asked in
UGC NET 2015 Paper 1 Question Paper (27-Dec-2015)
The correct answer is

Modigliani-Miller

Dividend theories fall into two groups: relevance theories (dividend policy affects firm value) and irrelevance theories (it does not).

Modigliani and Miller (1961) argued that, under perfect capital markets, no taxes and a given investment policy, firm value depends only on earning power of assets; the gain from dividends is exactly offset by the cost of raising external funds, so dividend policy is irrelevant.

J.E. Walter and M.J. Gordon built models in which dividend payout changes share value (relevance theories), and Ezra Solomon is associated with the traditional view that financing and payout decisions influence value.

Hence, the answer is Modigliani-Miller.
