Discuss different types of cyber crimes and measures required to be taken to fight the menace.

UPSC CSE 2020 (Prelims) CSAT Previous Year Paper (04-Oct-2020)

Cybercrimes are unlawful acts where a computer is either a tool or a target. They encompass a wide range of offenses. Common types include financial frauds like phishing, where criminals trick individuals into revealing sensitive information, and identity theft. Hacking involves gaining unauthorized access to computer systems to steal data or cause disruption.

Other forms are cyberstalking and harassment, spreading malicious software like ransomware that locks data until a fee is paid, and cyber terrorism, which targets critical national infrastructure.

Fighting this menace requires a multi-pronged approach. Stronger cyber laws and swift prosecution are essential. We need to enhance our cybersecurity infrastructure through bodies like CERT-In. Promoting international cooperation is crucial as cybercrimes are often cross-border. Most importantly, a massive public awareness campaign is needed to educate citizens on safe online practices, as human error is often the weakest link in the security chain.
