• Glossopteris: This is the most iconic and widespread genus. It features tongue-shaped leaves (lanceolate to ovate) with a prominent midrib and a distinct reticulate (net-like) venation pattern.

• Gangamopteris: Similar to Glossopteris in overall leaf shape, but crucially lacks a distinct midrib, having multiple veins arising from the base.

• Vertebraria: These are fossilized rhizomes (underground stems) believed to belong to Glossopteris plants. They show segmented, ladder-like structures internally.

• Schizoneura: Represents equisetalean (horsetail-like) stems, characterized by jointed axes and whorls of narrow leaves or sheaths at the nodes.

• Pecopteris: A common fern type, with bipinnate or tripinnate fronds where pinnules (leaflets) attach broadly to the rachis.

Palaeobiogeographic Significance:

The widespread distribution of the Glossopteris flora across present-day continents – India, Australia, Antarctica, South Africa, and South America – provided crucial evidence for Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift and later, plate tectonics. This identical, distinctive flora could only be explained if these landmasses were once connected as part of a supercontinent, Gondwanaland. Their presence indicated a unified landmass existing in higher southern latitudes during the Permo-Carboniferous, experiencing cool, moist, temperate conditions, further supporting their shared past and subsequent fragmentation and dispersal. This fossil evidence was pivotal in reconstructing ancient land configurations and understanding Earth's dynamic geological history.
