Corrosion is minimised through sacrificial protection, in which a more reactive metal such as zinc is coated over the metal that needs protection, as done in galvanisation. Since the reactive coating oxidises preferentially, it sacrifices itself and shields the underlying metal from attack. Increasing surface area, keeping metals moist, or exposing them to acidic fumes all speed up corrosion instead of preventing it.
