Question

Consider the following statements about simple machines. 1. Help lift heavy loads. 2. Can increase the distance through which effort acts. 3. May change the direction of force. 4. Violate the law of conservation of energy. Which of the above statements are correct?

This question was previously asked in
RRB Group D 2025 Question Paper (18-Aug-2026) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

1, 2 and 3 only

Simple machines such as levers, pulleys and inclined planes make work easier by helping lift heavy loads with less effort, and some machines increase the distance through which the effort is applied to trade off force for distance.

Machines like pulleys can also change the direction in which the effort force is applied, making tasks more convenient.

However, no machine violates the law of conservation of energy — output work can never exceed input work, and simple machines only redistribute force and distance, never create energy.

Hence, only statements 1, 2 and 3 are correct.
