TNPSC Group 1 Prelims 2026 GS Question Paper (27-Sep-2026)
The correct answer is

(i) and (ii) are correct

Yogurt is made when lactic acid bacteria such as Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus ferment milk sugar (lactose). So statement (ii) is correct.

During this fermentation the bacteria also produce acetaldehyde, the compound mainly responsible for the typical fresh, sharp flavour of yogurt. So statement (i) is correct.

Penicillin is produced by the fungus (mould) Penicillium notatum / Penicillium chrysogenum, not by bacteria, so statement (iii) is wrong. Spirulina is an edible cyanobacterium widely used as a protein-rich food supplement, so statement (iv) is also wrong.

Hence, (i) and (ii) are correct.
