Reason (R): Measuring growth only in absolute numbers provides detailed insights into population trends over time.

SSC CGL 2025 Tier 2 Paper 1 Question Paper (19-Jan-2026)
The correct answer is

A is true, but R is false

Assertion A is true: population growth is conventionally expressed both as the absolute increase in numbers (e.g. "the population rose by 18 million") and as a percentage / annual rate of change.

Reason R is false: absolute numbers alone do not give a detailed insight into population trends, because they ignore the size of the base population. A 1-million increase means very different things in a country of 5 million versus one of 500 million. Percentage change (or growth rate) is needed to compare trends meaningfully across countries and time periods.

Hence A is true, R is false.
