Amid the distributaries of which river is situated Divi Island ?
Krishna
Divi Island lies among the distributaries of the Krishna — option 4.
The place. Divi Island, or Diviseema, lies in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, at the delta where the river reaches the Bay of Bengal. It is enclosed between distributary channels of the Krishna and the sea, and the town of Avanigadda is its centre.
| River | Where it flows |
|---|---|
| Mahananda | Rises in Darjeeling; flows through north Bengal and Bihar, joining the Ganga in Katihar district |
| Vamsadhara | A short east-flowing river of Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh; the subject of a long inter-State dispute |
| Godavari | The largest peninsular river, the Dakshina Ganga; its delta is around Rajahmundry, north of the Krishna |
| Krishna | Rises at Mahabaleshwar in the Western Ghats; flows east through Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana to a delta in Andhra Pradesh |
Why deltaic islands form. As a river nears the sea its gradient falls almost to nothing, it can no longer carry its silt, and it splits into distributaries that wander across their own deposits. The land between two such channels becomes an island. India’s largest such island is Majuli on the Brahmaputra; the Sundarbans are a whole archipelago of them in the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta; and Sriharikota, on which the Indian spaceport stands, lies on the same coast a little to the south.
Why Diviseema is remembered. The cyclone of November 1977 struck it directly, and the storm surge killed tens of thousands of people — one of the worst such disasters in Indian records. It led directly to the building of cyclone shelters and to the warning systems that have since cut the death toll from Bay of Bengal cyclones dramatically.
Facts about the Krishna : about 1,400 km long, the fourth largest river in India by discharge; its chief tributaries are the Bhima and the Tungabhadra; the Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam dams are on it; and it is the subject of a long-standing water dispute between Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Hence, the answer is Krishna.
