Question

A vendor mixes two types of coffee beans — one costing ₹120 per kg and the other costing ₹180 per kg, in the ratio 1 : 2. If he sells the mixed variety at ₹152 per kg, find his gain or loss percent.

This question was previously asked in
SSC CGL 2025 Tier 2 Paper 1 Question Paper (19-Jan-2026)
The correct answer is

5% Loss

Step 1 – cost price per kg of the mixture (weighted average):

\(\text{CP} = \dfrac{1 \times 120 + 2 \times 180}{1 + 2} = \dfrac{120 + 360}{3} = \dfrac{480}{3} = ₹160\)

Step 2 – compare with SP = ₹152:

SP < CP, so there is a loss of \(160 - 152 = ₹8\) per kg.

Step 3 – loss percent:

\(\text{Loss \%} = \dfrac{8}{160} \times 100 = 5\%\)

Hence the vendor incurs a 5% loss.
