Question

A trader initially marks all his goods 60% above the cost price. He sells half of the goods at a discount of 25% on the marked price. For the remaining half, he revises the marked price to 80% above the cost price and then offers a discount of 30%. Find the overall profit percentage earned by the trader.

RRB NTPC 2025 Under Graduate CBT 2 Question Paper PDF (17-Sep-2026) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

23%

Assume the cost price of each half of the goods is \(₹100\), so total cost price \(= ₹200\).

For the first half: marked price \(= 100 \times 1.60 = ₹160\). Selling price after 25% discount \(= 160 \times 0.75 = ₹120\).

For the second half: marked price \(= 100 \times 1.80 = ₹180\). Selling price after 30% discount \(= 180 \times 0.70 = ₹126\).

Total selling price \(= 120 + 126 = ₹246\).

Profit percentage \(= \frac{246 - 200}{200} \times 100 = 23\%\).

Hence, the overall profit percentage earned by the trader is 23%.
