Among H, I, J, K, and L, who is the tallest? 

(I) J is taller than H and I but shorter than K.

The correct answer is

Both statements I and II together (and not statement I alone or statement II alone) are sufficient to answer the question

In a data-sufficiency question we do not need to find the full order — only whether the given statements let us identify the tallest among H, I, J, K and L. The method is to test each statement alone first, and only then test them together, writing the comparisons as inequalities (using > for "taller than").

Statement I: "J is taller than H and I but shorter than K." This gives K > J > H and K > J > I, i.e. the chain K > J > (H, I). Here K is taller than J, H and I — but this statement says nothing about L. L could be taller than K or shorter, so we cannot be sure who is tallest. Statement I alone is not sufficient.

Statement II: "L is shorter than K but taller than J." This gives K > L > J. This tells us K beats L and J, but it says nothing about H and I, either of whom might be taller than K. Statement II alone is not sufficient.

Combining I and II: From I, K > J > H and K > J > I; from II, K > L > J. Putting them together, everyone — L, J, H and I — is shorter than K:

K > L > J > (H, I)

So K is the tallest. This conclusion needs both statements: Statement I supplies K's superiority over J, H and I, while Statement II is needed to place L below K. Neither statement alone covers all four rivals. Therefore the correct answer is that both statements together (and not either one alone) are sufficient.
