A man purchased 20 dozen mangoes for ₹1,000. Out of these, 40 mangoes were rotten and could not be sold. At what rate per dozen should he sell the remaining mangoes to make a profit of 30%?

Calculating Selling Price for 30% Profit

The initial cost price (CP) of 20 dozen mangoes is ₹1,000.

  • Total mangoes purchased: \( 20 \text{ dozen} \times 12 \text{ mangoes/dozen} = 240 \text{ mangoes} \)
  • Mangoes rotten: 40 mangoes
  • Saleable mangoes: \( 240 - 40 = 200 \text{ mangoes} \)

Determining Target Selling Price

The desired profit is 30% on the cost price.

  • Profit amount: \( 30\% \text{ of } ₹1,000 = \frac{30}{100} \times 1,000 = ₹300 \)
  • Total Selling Price (SP) required: Cost Price + Profit = \( ₹1,000 + ₹300 = ₹1,300 \)

Calculating Rate Per Dozen

The total selling price of ₹1,300 must be achieved by selling the remaining 200 mangoes.

  • Selling price per mango: \( \frac{₹1,300}{200 \text{ mangoes}} = ₹6.50/\text{mango} \)
  • Selling price per dozen: \( ₹6.50/\text{mango} \times 12 \text{ mangoes/dozen} = ₹78/\text{dozen} \)

Therefore, the man should sell the remaining mangoes at ₹78 per dozen.
