Question

A convex mirror has a radius of curvature of 50 cm. A parallel beam of light strikes the mirror. At what distance from the pole does the reflected beam appear to diverge?

The correct answer is

25 cm behind the mirror

For a convex mirror, the focal length is half the radius of curvature, so f = R/2 = 50/2 = 25 cm.

A parallel beam of light striking a convex mirror diverges after reflection, and the reflected rays appear to come from a point behind the mirror — this point is the focus.

Since the focus of a convex mirror lies behind the mirror at a distance equal to the focal length, the reflected beam appears to diverge from 25 cm behind the mirror.

Hence, the correct answer is 25 cm behind the mirror.
