Question

A candy shop owner buys three kinds of candies: red, blue, and green. Red candies are purchased at 3 for ₹15, blue candies at 4 for ₹18, and green candies at 5 for ₹22. He mixes them in the ratio 1:1:2. He sells all the mixed candies at 2 for ₹10. What is his approximate gain or loss percentage?

This question was previously asked in
SSC CGL 2025 Tier 2 Paper 1 Question Paper (19-Jan-2026)
The correct answer is

Profit of 9.29%

Find the cost per candy for each kind:

Red: \(\tfrac{15}{3} = 5\) per candy. Blue: \(\tfrac{18}{4} = 4.5\) per candy. Green: \(\tfrac{22}{5} = 4.4\) per candy.

In the mix ratio 1 : 1 : 2, take 1 red + 1 blue + 2 green (total 4 candies):

Total cost = \(5 + 4.5 + 2 \times 4.4 = 5 + 4.5 + 8.8 = 18.3\).

Selling price at 2 for ₹10 gives \(5\) per candy; selling 4 candies earns \(4 \times 5 = 20\).

Profit = \(20 - 18.3 = 1.7\).

Profit % = \(\dfrac{1.7}{18.3} \times 100 \approx 9.29\%\).

Hence, the shop owner makes a profit of approximately 9.29%.
