Question

A block of metal of mass 500 g has a relative density of 2.5. What will be its apparent mass when it is fully immersed in water?

This question was previously asked in
RRB ALP/Technician 2018 CBT 2 Electronics Mechanic Question Paper (23-Jan-2019) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

300 g

Relative density = density of metal/density of water, and density of water is 1 g/cm³.

Volume of the metal block = mass/density = 500/2.5 = 200 cm³.

Mass of water displaced = 200 × 1 = 200 g, which is the loss of apparent mass.

Apparent mass = 500 - 200 = 300 g

Check: 300 g + 200 g = 500 g, the real mass.

Hence, 300 g.
