UPSC CSE Mains 2021 Essay Question Paper

UPSC has conducted the CSE IAS Mains exam on January 07, 2022. The exam was held at various exam centres across the country with COVID-19 guidelines. Candidates who have cleared the UPSC CSE Prelims cutoff were supposed to appear for the Mains exam as part of the selection process. As the COVID-19 cases are rising across the country, the commission had released the COVID-19 guidelines on its website a few days before the exam. Candidates who had to appear for the Mains exam were supposed to follow these COVID-19 guidelines.

Firstly, let’s have a look at the UPSC IAS Mains exam pattern given below in the table:

UPSC Mains Essay Paper 2021

There were two sections in the Essay paper. Check the questions asked in the paper below:

Section A

Ques. 1 The process of self-discovery has now been technologically outsourced.

Ques. 2 Your perception of me is a reflection of you; my reaction to you is an awareness of me.

Ques. 3 Philosophy of wantlessness is Utopian, while materialism is a chimera.

Ques. 4 The real is rational and the rational is real.

Section B

Ques. 5 Hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

Ques. 6 What is research, but a blind date with knowledge !

Ques. 7 History repeats itself, first as a tragedy, second as a farce.

Ques. 8 There are better practices to “best practices”.


The Union Service Public Commission will release the Mains exam result on its website in February 2022 (tentative). Candidates are advised to visit the UPSC official website regularly for updates.
