IAS (UPSC CSE) General Studies Paper 4 (GS4) i.e UPSC IAS Mains Paper V is one of the mandatory papers of the IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains exam. There are a total of 9 papers in the IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains exam among which 4 papers are on General Studies.

UPSC Mains GS Paper IV Exam Pattern and Structure

IAS (UPSC CSE) GS 4 is a descriptive paper of 3 hours with a total of 250 marks. IAS (UPSC CSE) GS 4 consists of 12 questions divided into two sections. All the questions are compulsory. Since it is a descriptive paper, there is no negative marking.

Depending upon the length of the answer of IAS (UPSC CSE) GS 4, the questions consist of 10 marks and 20 marks. The 150-words answers will hold 10 marks, whereas the 250-word answers will hold 20 marks.

UPSC GS 4 will be descriptive, including questions in the form of a case study and direct concept-related questions. Marks will also be allotted based on the length of the answer.

• Whereas the case study questions will test the candidate’s usage of those concepts in a situation involving the candidates and other stakeholders like the public, politicians, pressure groups, etc.
