NIFT 2026 registration opened on December 8, 2025 and closed on January 19, 2026, conducted by the National Testing Agency on behalf of NIFT for admission to design, technology, and management programmes across 19 campuses. What makes NIFT registration different from most entrance exams is that a single application can lead into two very different kinds of tests, a written exam and a hands-on creative test, and which combination a candidate faces depends entirely on the programme they choose. NIFT 2026 Two-Stage Selection: Written Exam Then Situation Test or Interview

A single NIFT application sets a candidate up for up to two separate evaluation stages, and only candidates who clear Stage 1 move on to Stage 2. The exact combination of tests depends entirely on which programme was selected during registration.

• Stage 1: the written exam, made up of the General Ability Test (GAT) and, for design programmes, the Creative Ability Test (CAT). This is common to all applicants for a given programme.
• Stage 2: only for candidates shortlisted from Stage 1. Depending on the programme, this is either a Situation Test (hands-on, material-based creative task) or a Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

• Appearing for both GAT and CAT (where both are required) is mandatory. Missing either component means the candidate is not shortlisted, even if they scored well on the one they did attempt.

Which NIFT Exam Components Apply to Which Programme

NIFT does not use the same test combination for every programme, and mismatching this is one of the most common sources of confusion during registration. The table below shows what each programme actually requires.

Candidates applying to more than one programme with different requirements need to prepare for each combination separately, since GAT alone will not qualify someone for a CAT-required programme.

NIFT 2026 Application Fee

The fee varies by category and increases for candidates applying to more than one programme in the same cycle. A distinct, higher fee applies to NRI, foreign national, and OCI/PIO applicants.

Candidates applying to two programmes pay a higher combined fee rather than two separate full fees. Payment is accepted online through debit card, credit card, or net banking, and NIFT is one of the few remaining exams that also accepts a Demand Draft for offline payment.

How to Register for NIFT 2026

Registration happens through the NTA-operated NIFT admission portal and takes about 20 to 30 minutes if all documents and photos are ready beforehand.

• Step 1: Visit the official NIFT admission portal and complete new candidate registration using a valid email and mobile number.
• Step 2: Log in with the generated credentials and fill in personal, academic, and communication details.
• Step 3: Select the programme (or up to two programmes) and preferred exam city.
• Step 4: Upload a colour photograph with a white background (self-composed selfies are not accepted) and a scanned signature.
• Step 5: Enter Aadhaar details and category information, uploading a category certificate if claiming reservation.
• Step 6: Pay the application fee online, or generate a Demand Draft if paying offline.
• Step 7: Review all entered details on the preview screen.
• Step 8: Submit the form and download the confirmation page for your records.

What Happens in the NIFT Situation Test

The Situation Test is unlike anything else in this process, since it is a physical, hands-on task rather than a written or spoken evaluation, and it applies specifically to B.Des candidates shortlisted from Stage 1.

• Candidates are given craft materials on the spot, such as paper, clay, straws, and thread, and asked to build a three-dimensional model or concept within a fixed time limit.
• Evaluation covers creativity, material handling skill, observation and visualisation ability, concept development, space management, and how well the final piece is presented and finished.
• No advance notice of the specific task is given. Candidates prepare generally for material handling and design thinking rather than for one predictable exercise.
• M.Des candidates do not take the Situation Test. Their Stage 2 is a Group Discussion and Personal Interview instead, even though they also take CAT at Stage 1 alongside B.Des candidates.

Documents Required for NIFT 2026 Registration

NIFT verifies identity physically at the exam centre in addition to what is uploaded during registration, so keeping originals ready matters as much as the digital uploads.

• Valid, active email ID (must remain active for at least a year, since NIFT communicates through it throughout the admission cycle).
• Aadhaar number, entered during registration and cross-checked against a physical Aadhaar card at the exam centre for the CAT paper specifically.
• Recent colour photograph with a white background. Self-composed portraits or selfies are explicitly rejected.
• Scanned signature.
• Category certificate, for candidates claiming SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD reservation.
• Class 10 and Class 12 (or graduation, for PG programmes) academic records.

NIFT 2026 Application Correction Window

NIFT opened a short correction window immediately after the extended registration deadline, giving candidates a narrow but final chance to fix errors before the exam.

• The correction window ran for about two days, closing at 11:50 PM on the final day.
• Only candidates who had already submitted their application before the deadline could access the correction facility.
• Once the window closed, no further changes were accepted under any circumstance, regardless of the nature of the error.
• A separate one-time correction facility was also opened specifically for PhD applicants, run independently of the UG/PG correction window.

After Submitting the NIFT 2026 Application

Once registration closes, the admit card is released before the exam, downloaded using the application number and password. The Stage 1 written exam combines GAT and, where applicable, CAT, with no negative marking and each correct answer worth 1 mark. A provisional answer key follows with a short objection window, then a final answer key and Stage 1 results. Shortlisted candidates proceed to Stage 2, either the Situation Test or Group Discussion and Personal Interview, booked through a first-come-first-served slot system. Final results combine both stages into a Common Merit Rank, after which candidates register separately for counselling, fill campus and programme preferences, and go through seat allotment rounds with freeze, float, or slide options at each stage.
