RRB JE CBT 1 acts as the first screening stage of the recruitment process. Unlike CBT 2, the first-stage paper does not primarily test branch-specific engineering knowledge.
Candidates are assessed through questions from Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science. This makes the first stage largely focused on calculation ability, logical thinking, basic science concepts and awareness of current and static topics.
The examination is particularly speed-oriented because candidates need to answer a large number of objective questions within a limited duration.
The first-stage Computer Based Test consists of 100 questions carrying 100 marks. Candidates are given 90 minutes to complete the paper.
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 30 | 30 |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 25 | 25 |
| General Awareness | 15 | 15 |
| General Science | 30 | 30 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
A negative marking of 1/3 mark is applicable for every incorrect response.
Candidates should therefore focus on accuracy along with speed instead of attempting questions through random guessing.
Mathematics contributes a significant portion of CBT 1 and can play an important role in improving the overall score.
Preparation should focus on areas such as:
Candidates should practise short calculation methods because lengthy calculations can affect the number of questions attempted within the available time.
The Reasoning section checks a candidate's ability to identify patterns, relationships and logical connections.
Questions may be based on:
Regular practice can make this section relatively scoring because many questions depend more on pattern recognition than lengthy calculations.
General Science contains questions mainly based on basic concepts from Physics, Chemistry and Life Science.
Candidates should revise school-level concepts rather than focusing only on advanced engineering topics for CBT 1.
Important areas may include mechanics, electricity, heat, light, acids and bases, metals and non-metals, chemical reactions, human biology, diseases, nutrition and environmental science.
The purpose of this section is to evaluate general scientific understanding rather than specialised technical knowledge.
General Awareness evaluates knowledge of current developments and important static subjects.
Preparation may cover:
Candidates should combine regular current-affairs revision with static General Knowledge rather than depending entirely on one area.

The exact difficulty level can be determined only after the examination is conducted. However, CBT 1 typically requires a combination of conceptual clarity and fast question-solving ability.
The section-wise analysis will be updated after each shift with details such as:
| Section | Difficulty Level | Good Attempts |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | To Be Updated | To Be Updated |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | To Be Updated | To Be Updated |
| General Awareness | To Be Updated | To Be Updated |
| General Science | To Be Updated | To Be Updated |
| Overall | To Be Updated | To Be Updated |
Candidates should avoid treating good attempts as a fixed qualifying score because the actual cut-off can vary according to RRB, category, vacancies and normalization.
Although CBT 1 and CBT 2 have different structures, analysing the first-stage paper can help shortlisted candidates understand the overall standard of the recruitment process.
Once CBT 1 is completed, candidates should shift their preparation primarily towards CBT 2 because the second stage contains a much stronger technical component.
Engineering candidates should revise their respective discipline thoroughly instead of continuing to spend most of their preparation time on CBT 1-level aptitude questions.
Candidates shortlisted through CBT 1 will be called for CBT 2.
The second-stage examination contains 150 questions and gives substantial weightage to technical abilities.
Broadly, CBT 2 includes:
| Subject | Questions |
|---|---|
| General Awareness | 15 |
| Physics and Chemistry | 15 |
| Basics of Computers and Applications | 10 |
| Basics of Environment and Pollution Control | 10 |
| Technical Abilities | 100 |
| Total | 150 |
The Technical Abilities section is based on the engineering or technical examination group applicable to the candidate.
The recruitment process includes multiple stages, and candidates must qualify each applicable stage to be considered for final appointment.
The selection process broadly includes:
CBT 1 → CBT 2 → Document Verification → Medical Examination
CBT 1 is primarily a screening stage, while CBT 2 plays a major role because it evaluates specialised technical knowledge.
Candidates shortlisted after the computer-based examinations are required to produce the prescribed educational, category and identification documents during verification.
Candidates should not solve previous year papers only to calculate a score. Each paper should be treated as an analysis exercise.
After completing a paper, separate the questions into:
This makes it easier to identify the exact reason behind lost marks.
For example, repeated errors in percentage or time and work indicate a need to revise Mathematics fundamentals, while repeated mistakes in Physics concepts suggest additional General Science revision.

Ques: How many questions are asked in RRB JE CBT 1?
Ans: CBT 1 contains 100 objective-type questions carrying one mark each. These are divided among Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science. Candidates receive 90 minutes to complete the examination.
Ques: Is RRB JE CBT 1 a technical engineering exam?
Ans: CBT 1 is not primarily branch-specific. It focuses on Mathematics, Reasoning, General Awareness and General Science. Detailed engineering and technical knowledge becomes considerably more important in CBT 2, where Technical Abilities forms the largest section.
Ques: Is there negative marking in the RRB JE 2026 exam?
Ans: Yes. One-third of a mark is deducted for every incorrect response. Candidates should therefore avoid random attempts and focus on questions where they can arrive at an answer with reasonable confidence.
Ques: How should candidates prepare using RRB JE previous year question papers?
Ans: Candidates should first solve papers section-wise to strengthen individual subjects and later attempt full papers under a 90-minute limit. Every mock attempt should be followed by a review of incorrect, skipped and time-consuming questions so that weak areas can be improved systematically.
