Question

Which process leads to the formation of a positive ion?

The correct answer is

Loss of electrons

An ion is formed when a neutral atom gains or loses electrons. The number of protons in the nucleus does not change.

If an atom loses one or more electrons, the protons (positive charges) outnumber the electrons (negative charges), so the particle carries a net positive charge. Such an ion is called a cation, e.g. Na → Na+ + e−.

Gaining electrons gives a negative ion (anion), e.g. Cl + e− → Cl−. Sharing of electrons forms a covalent bond, not an ion, and splitting of molecules does not by itself create a charge.

Hence, Loss of electrons.
