Question

Which one of the following is the correct estimation model based on software equation?

UGC NET 2024 Management Question Paper (02-Sep-2024) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is

E = [LOC×B0.333/P]3 × (1/t4)

The software equation is a dynamic multivariable estimation model derived by Putnam and Myers from productivity data of thousands of projects. It assumes a specific distribution of effort over the life of a project and relates delivered size, special skills, productivity and duration.

Step 1 — The model is \(E = \left[\dfrac{\text{LOC} \times B^{0.333}}{P}\right]^{3} \times \dfrac{1}{t^{4}}\), where E is effort in person-months or person-years, t is project duration in months or years, B is a special skills factor and P is a productivity parameter.

Step 2 — B grows slowly with size (about 0.16 for 5–15 KLOC and 0.39 for programs above 70 KLOC), and P reflects process maturity and the application type (for example about 2,000 for real-time embedded software and 28,000 for business systems).

Step 3 — The cube on the bracket and the fourth power of time come from Putnam's derivation: compressing the schedule increases effort very steeply because effort varies inversely with the fourth power of duration.

The forms with exponent 0.222 squared, 0.444 to the fourth power or 0.111 to the sixth power, or with t cubed in the denominator, do not match the published equation.

E = [LOC×B0.333/P]3 × (1/t4) option is correct.
