Question

Which of the following quantities does the slope of a velocity-time graph represent for an object in motion?

RRB Group D 2025 Question Paper (18-Aug-2026) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

Acceleration

On a velocity-time graph, velocity is plotted on the y-axis and time on the x-axis. The slope of the graph is defined as the change in y divided by the change in x, that is, the change in velocity divided by the change in time. But change in velocity divided by change in time is exactly the definition of acceleration.

Displacement is instead represented by the area between the curve and the time axis, not by the slope. Speed is only the magnitude of velocity, not its rate of change. Force is not a quantity that a velocity-time graph shows at all; it would need to be worked out from acceleration through Newton’s second law.

Hence, the answer is Acceleration.
