BPSC 70th 2024 Prelims General Studies Question Paper (13-Dec-2024)
The correct answer is

Fodder

Fodder crops are grown in the zaid season — option 2.

The three cropping seasons of India.

SeasonSownHarvestedTypical crops
KharifJune-July, with the onset of the monsoonSeptember-OctoberRice, maize, jowar, bajra, cotton, groundnut, jute, sugarcane
RabiOctober-NovemberMarch-AprilWheat, barley, gram, peas, mustard, linseed
ZaidMarch-April, between rabi and kharifJuneWatermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, vegetables, fodder crops

Eliminating the other three. Gram and mustard are the classic rabi crops, sown after the monsoon and harvested in spring; cotton is a long-duration kharif crop. Only fodder is left, and fodder crops such as berseem, maize for green fodder and sorghum are indeed grown in the short summer season.

What the zaid season is like. It is a short season of about three months between the harvest of rabi and the sowing of kharif, falling in the hot, dry months before the monsoon. Because there is no rain, zaid cultivation depends almost entirely on irrigation, and it suits crops that grow fast and tolerate heat — the cucurbits, summer vegetables, and green fodder for livestock at exactly the time of year when grazing is scarcest.

Why it matters agriculturally. Zaid cropping raises the cropping intensity, the number of crops taken from the same land in a year, and so raises income per hectare. Its spread is a direct measure of the spread of assured irrigation, which is why it is much more common in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh than in rain-fed regions.

Hence, the answer is Fodder.
