Question

Which of the following is a property of a colloidal solution?

This question was previously asked in
RRB Group D 2025 Question Paper (18-Aug-2026) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

Particles do not settle on standing

A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture whose dispersed particles are between 1 nm and 1000 nm in size, larger than solute particles of a true solution but too small to see with the naked eye.

Because the particles are so small and are kept in constant Brownian motion by collisions with solvent molecules, gravity cannot pull them down and they remain uniformly dispersed even on prolonged standing.

The same small size lets colloidal particles pass through ordinary filter paper, so filtration cannot separate the components; a centrifuge or special ultrafilter is required.

Hence, the correct property is that particles do not settle on standing.
