Question

Which method is commonly used to separate a pure solid from its solution in a homogeneous mixture?

The correct answer is

Crystallization

In a solution the solid (solute) is uniformly dissolved, so it cannot be held back by a filter paper or allowed to settle.

Crystallisation heats the solution to concentrate it and then cools it slowly; the solid separates as pure crystals while impurities stay in the remaining liquid (mother liquor). It is used, for example, to get pure copper sulphate or salt from impure samples.

Filtration and decantation separate only insoluble solids, and distillation is used to recover the liquid (solvent) or separate miscible liquids; plain evaporation can also decompose some solids and leaves the soluble impurities behind.

Hence, the answer is Crystallization.
