Which is the mountain range along the Mediterranean Coast of Asia Minor ?
Taurus
The Taurus mountains run along the Mediterranean coast of Asia Minor — option 3.
The setting. Asia Minor, or Anatolia, is the peninsula that forms the Asian part of Turkey, bounded by the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean to the west and the Mediterranean to the south. Its interior is a high plateau, and it is rimmed by mountains on two sides — which is why two of the options are genuine Turkish ranges and only their position separates them.
| Range | Where it lies |
|---|---|
| Taurus | The southern rim, along the Mediterranean coast; its highest peaks exceed 3,700 m |
| Pontic | The northern rim, along the Black Sea coast |
| Alborz (Alburz) | Northern Iran, south of the Caspian; Mount Damavand, 5,610 m, is Iran’s highest peak |
| Kirthar | Pakistan, between Sindh and Balochistan |
Why the Taurus matters. It separates the Mediterranean coastal strip from the dry Anatolian plateau, and the passes through it — above all the Cilician Gates — carried the armies and caravans of antiquity between Anatolia and Syria. The range is limestone, heavily karstic, with caves and underground rivers, and the Seyhan and Ceyhan rise in it. The two ranges converge in the east and continue as the Armenian highlands, where the Tigris and Euphrates begin.
The tectonic reason. Anatolia is being squeezed between the Arabian and Eurasian plates and pushed westward along the North Anatolian Fault — which is why Turkey is so earthquake-prone. The Taurus and Pontic ranges are part of the Alpine-Himalayan belt, the same great chain of young fold mountains that runs from the Atlas through the Alps and the Zagros to the Himalaya.
Hence, the answer is Taurus.
