The correct answer is

Foot-hills of Karst

The Dalmatian coast is formed at the foot-hills of the Karst region — option 3.

What it is. The Dalmatian coast runs along the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea, in Croatia. It is the type example of a concordant or longitudinal coast: the ranges of the Dinaric Alps run parallel to the shore, and when the land subsided or sea level rose, the sea flooded the valleys between the ridges. The ridges themselves survived as a long chain of narrow islands lying parallel to the mainland, separated by drowned valleys that now form channels.

Coast typeRelation of the ranges to the seaResult
Concordant (Dalmatian, Pacific type)Parallel to the coastLong narrow islands and channels — the Dalmatian coast
Discordant (Atlantic type)At right angles to the coastHeadlands and deep bays — the rias of Spain and south-west England

Why “Karst” belongs in the answer. The word karst comes from the Kras plateau of Slovenia and Croatia, immediately behind this coast — it is the region that gave its name to the whole family of limestone landforms found the world over: sinkholes, caves, underground rivers, disappearing streams and dry valleys. The Dalmatian shore is the seaward edge of that limestone country, which is why it is described as the foot-hills of the Karst.

Why the other options fail. Intermontane describes a basin lying between mountain ranges, not a coast. Foot-hills alone is incomplete — it omits the limestone character that defines this coast. And river depositional would describe a delta or an alluvial coast, the very opposite of a drowned, rocky, submerged one.

An Indian comparison : the Konkan coast has a similar parallel arrangement, with the Western Ghats running alongside it, though it lacks the drowned island chain; the classic Indian karst landscapes are in the Meghalaya limestones and around Borra in Andhra Pradesh.

Hence, the answer is Foot-hills of Karst.
