Which high-yielding semi-dwarf rice variety was dubbed “Miracle Rice” during the Green Revolution ?
IR8
IR8 was the first semi-dwarf, high-yielding rice variety, released in 1966 by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, from a cross of Peta (Indonesia) and Dee-geo-woo-gen (Taiwan).
Its short, stiff stem did not lodge under heavy fertiliser use, and it gave nearly double the yield of traditional varieties, so it became famous as “Miracle Rice” and helped spread the Green Revolution in rice in India.
IR20 was a later IRRI variety, while Jaya and Padma were Indian semi-dwarf varieties developed afterwards, partly using the same dwarfing source.
Hence, IR8.
