74th Amendment Act
The 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992, granted constitutional status to urban local bodies, that is, the municipalities.
It inserted Part IXA and the Twelfth Schedule into the Constitution, providing for the composition, powers and functions of Nagar Panchayats, Municipal Councils and Municipal Corporations.
The closely related 73rd Amendment gave similar status to rural Panchayati Raj institutions, while the 86th Amendment dealt with education and the 42nd with the Preamble and other provisions.
Hence, constitutional status to municipalities was given by the 74th Amendment Act.
