Raja Rammohan Roy founded the Atmiya Sabha in Calcutta in 1815, one of the earliest socio-religious reform organisations in colonial Bengal.

Its central aim was to oppose idolatry, image worship, and ritualistic excesses, while promoting a rational, monotheistic interpretation of Vedantic philosophy drawn from the Upanishads.

This reformist thinking later fed into the founding of the Brahmo Sabha in 1828, which evolved into the Brahmo Samaj.
