Article 170 of the Constitution says the Legislative Assembly of each State shall consist of not more than 500 and not less than 60 members chosen by direct election from territorial constituencies.
Some smaller States have fewer than 60 members by special provision (for example Goa, Sikkim and Mizoram). Uttar Pradesh has the largest Assembly with 403 elected members, well within the 500 ceiling.
The figures 450, 550 and 600 do not appear in Article 170.
