What is the main objective of the ‘Genome India Project’?
Map genetic diversity of Indians
The Genome India Project was launched in 2020 by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
It aims to build a reference database of the genetic variation of the Indian population by sequencing whole genomes of people from diverse population groups.
Data from about 10,000 genomes from 99 population groups was released in January 2025 through the Indian Biological Data Centre.
This helps in predictive diagnosis, precision medicine and understanding of genetic diseases; it is not a project on wildlife, vaccines or crops.
Hence, Map genetic diversity of Indians.
