Student’s t-Test

The Student’s t-test is a fundamental statistical method used to determine whether there is a significant difference between the means of two groups. It is widely applied in biological research, such as comparing drug effects, evaluating environmental impacts, or analyzing physiological differences. The t-test helps scientists decide if observed differences are real or simply due to random variation.

For two independent groups, the t-test formula is:

t=$\frac{\bar{X}_1 - \bar{X}_2}{SE_{\text{difference}}}$t

Where:

$\bar{X}_1$ and $\bar{X}_2$ are the sample means of the two groups.

$SE_{\text{difference}}$ is the standard error of the difference between means, accounting for variability within each group.

Example Scenario:
We test if a new diet affects weight gain in lab mice over one week.

Group A (Control): 5, 7, 6 g

Group B (New Diet): 9, 8, 10 g

Steps:

Hypotheses:

Null ($H_0$): $μA=μB$ (no significant difference)

Alternative ($H_1$): $\mu_A \ne \mu_B$(significant difference)

Calculate Sample Means:

Mean A: (5+7+6)/3=6(

Mean B: (9+8+10)/3=9

Compute Standard Deviations and Standard Error: Typically involves pooled variance, often calculated using statistical software for accuracy.

t-Statistic and Degrees of Freedom:

$df = (n_1-1) + (n_2-1) = (3-1) + (3-1) = 4$

Compare with Critical t or p-value: A calculated t-value exceeding the critical t (or p < 0.05) leads to rejection of $H_0$

In this example, the clear difference in means suggests a significant effect of the new diet on weight gain. The t-test thus provides a rigorous, quantitative method for evaluating biological data and drawing statistically valid conclusions.
