Environmentally, mining often involves extensive land disturbance, leading to habitat destruction, deforestation, and soil erosion. The processes are highly water-intensive and can contaminate local water sources with heavy metals and toxic chemicals. Processing these minerals, particularly rare earth elements, often generates large volumes of toxic waste (tailings) and radioactive byproducts. Energy-intensive smelting and refining contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.

Economically, the challenges include price volatility due to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions, as production is often concentrated in a few countries. High capital costs for new mines and processing facilities, coupled with long lead times, can deter investment. Ethical concerns regarding labour practices and conflict minerals also add complexity.
