UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are sudden and destructive releases of water from glacial lakes. The primary cause often stems from the instability of the natural dams that hold back these lakes, typically composed of moraine (loose rock and sediment). Factors contributing to dam failure include the rapid melting of glaciers, which can overfill the lake, increasing hydrostatic pressure on the dam. Seismic activity can also destabilize moraine dams, leading to breaches. Additionally, large ice avalanches or rockfalls plunging into the lake can generate displacement waves, overtopping and eroding the dam. Climate change, by accelerating glacial melt, is increasingly identified as a significant underlying driver, making these events more frequent and severe in many mountainous regions.
