In hypothesis testing the null hypothesis (Ho) is a statement of 'no effect' or 'no difference', while the researcher's own principal research hypothesis is the alternative hypothesis (H1), which asserts that an effect or relationship does exist. When a researcher fails to reject the null hypothesis, the data have not provided sufficient evidence of an effect, so the claim made by the research (alternative) hypothesis is not supported. "Accepting the research hypothesis" is the opposite of what the outcome permits, since the evidence favoured the null. "Not taking any decision on the research hypothesis" is wrong because the test does yield a decision about H1 (it is not supported). "Improving the research hypothesis" describes a later methodological step, not the logical implication that follows immediately from failing to reject Ho.
