Question

The duration for which of the usable compost generation is 3−6 months?

This question was previously asked in
UGC NET 2019 Home Science Question Paper (04-Dec-2019) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is

Pit composting

The question concerns the time taken by different waste-composting methods to produce usable compost.

In pit composting, biodegradable waste is layered in a dug pit and left to decompose naturally through microbial action. Because it relies on slow, unaided natural decomposition, it typically takes about 3 to 6 months to yield usable compost.

Vermi composting uses earthworms to accelerate breakdown and usually gives compost in a shorter period (about 2 to 3 months). Automatic and semi-automatic waste converters are mechanized systems that use heating, grinding and controlled aeration to produce compost very rapidly, often within a single day to a few weeks, far faster than the 3−6 month range. Hence only the slow, natural pit method fits the stated duration.

Correct answer: Pit composting
