Embedded in a positively charged sphere like seeds in a watermelon

J.J. Thomson's atomic model (1904), also called the Plum Pudding Model, proposed that:

  • An atom is a sphere of uniformly distributed positive charge.
  • Electrons are embedded in this sphere like plums in a pudding, or like seeds in a watermelon.

This model was superseded by Rutherford's nuclear model (1911) after the gold-foil alpha-particle scattering experiment showed that most of an atom's mass is concentrated in a tiny, dense, positively charged nucleus.
