Linear Momentum:

  • The linear momentum of a body is the  quantity of motion contained in the body .
  • It is measured in terms of the  force required to stop the body in unit time .
  • It is also measured as the  product of the mass of the body and its velocity  i.e.,

Momentum = mass × velocity.

EXPLANATION :

  • From the above, it is clear that momentum is defined as the  product of the mass of the body and its velocity  i.e.,

⇒ Momentum (p) = mass (m) × velocity (v)

  • As we know that, the SI unit of mass is kg and the SI unit of velocity is m/s . Therefore the unit of momentum is 

⇒ p = kgms -1

  • Therefore, its unit is kg.ms -1.
