Question

The SI Unit of torque is ______

This question was previously asked in
RRB ALP 2018 CBT 2 Fitter Question Paper (21-Jan-2019) (Shift 3)
The correct answer is

N-m

CONCEPT:

Torque (τ):

  • The physical quantity, similar as force that causes the rotational motion. It is the cross product of the force with the perpendicular distance between the axis of rotation and the point of application of the force with the force.
  • Torque (τ) = r × F = r F sin θ

[Where, r = distance from point of application of force (in metre), f = force (in Newton) and θ = angle between r and F]

  • Also, Torque (τ) = r F = r F

Where, r = component of the distance in the direction perpendicular to the F

F = component of the force in the direction perpendicular to r

EXPLANATION:

We know that,

Torque (τ) = r F sin θ

r = in metre and F = in Newton and sin θ = no unit

∴ The SI unit of Torque (τ) is Newton-metre or N-m, Hence Option 3 is correct
