The resistance of a 10 m long copper wire is R ohm. What will be the resistance of a 5 m long copper wire?

The correct answer is

0.5R ohm

The correct answer is Option 1 i.e. 0.5R ohm.

 

To find the resistance of the 5 m long copper wire, we can use the formula for resistance of a wire:

R=ρ(L/A)

Where:

  • R is resistance

  • ρ (rho) is the resistivity of the material (same for copper)

  • L is the length of the wire

  • A is the cross-sectional area

Now, since the wire is made of the same material and we assume it has the same thickness (i.e., same A), the resistance is directly proportional to the length.

So:

Rnew/Roriginal = Lnew/Loriginal

Substituting values:

Rnew/R = 5/10

Rnew = R/2

The resistance of the 5 m long copper wire will be R/2 ohms.
