The correct answer is
Calcitriol

Vitamin D: Identifying the Active Form

Vitamin D obtained from sunlight or diet exists in precursor forms, such as Cholecalciferol (D3) and Ergocalciferol (D2). These forms are biologically inactive and must undergo metabolic activation in the body.

Vitamin D Metabolism Steps

  • Liver Conversion: Precursor forms are first converted in the liver to calcidiol (25-hydroxyvitamin D).
  • Kidney Conversion: Calcidiol is then converted in the kidneys to the final active form, calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D).

Calcitriol as the Active Hormone

Calcitriol is the hormonally active form of Vitamin D. It plays a crucial role in calcium absorption from the intestines, bone mineralization, and regulating calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Dehydrocholesterol is a precursor before UV exposure, while Cholecalciferol and Ergocalciferol are intermediate forms requiring further activation.

Therefore, Calcitriol is the functionally active form of Vitamin D.
