Question

Seven boxes A, B, C, D, E, F and G are kept one over the other but not necessarily in the same order.

No box is kept above F. Only three boxes are kept between F and E. Only one box is kept between C and D. D is kept immediately above E. Only four boxes are kept between C and G. A is kept at some place above B. Which box is kept at third from the top?

The correct answer is

A

Number the positions 1 (top) to 7 (bottom). No box is kept above F, so F is at position 1.

Only three boxes are kept between F and E, so E is at position 5. D is kept immediately above E, so D is at position 4.

Only one box is kept between C and D (position 4), so C is at position 2 or 6. Only four boxes are kept between C and G: if C were at position 6, G would have to be at position 1, which F occupies. So C is at position 2 and G is at position 7.

Positions 3 and 6 remain for A and B. A is kept at some place above B, so A is at position 3 and B at position 6.

Therefore the box kept third from the top is A.

Check: F is on top; C, A and D lie between F and E; A lies between C and D; D is just above E; A, D, E and B lie between C and G; A is above B – every condition holds.

Hence, A.
