globalization.

Regional imbalances refer to uneven levels of development and well-being across different areas. These arise from a mix of internal (in situ) and external (ex situ) factors.

In situ factors are those natural to a region. For instance, areas with rich mineral deposits, fertile land, or coastal access often progress faster due to advantages in resources, trade, or agriculture. Similarly, good infrastructure like ports or railways can give regions a strong start. On the other hand, difficult terrains—such as arid deserts, flood-prone areas, or mountains—can restrict growth.

Ex situ factors come from outside influences. Colonial policies once concentrated investments in specific regions, leaving others neglected. In independent India, state policies, industrial projects, and highway networks often favored certain zones over others. Today, globalization further widens these gaps, as some regions integrate quickly with global markets while others remain sidelined.

Thus, regional imbalances emerge from the constant interplay of internal strengths and external forces.
