Problem solving methods are used by the teacher in ................ level of teaching.
Reflective
Teaching is classified into three levels. The memory level (Herbart) aims at retention and recall of facts; the understanding level (Morrison) aims at grasping relationships, principles and generalisations; the reflective level (Hunt) is the highest, problem-centred level.
At the reflective level the teacher places a real problem before the learners, who define it, form hypotheses, collect evidence, test the hypotheses and arrive at conclusions. Problem solving is therefore the characteristic method of this level, and it develops critical and independent thinking.
The memory level relies on drill and repetition, and the understanding level on explanation and demonstration of relationships, so neither uses problem solving as its main method. A 'basic' level is not one of the recognised levels of teaching.
Reflective option is correct.
